Who created Bidwatcher?
Bidwatcher was originally created by Trent and Tom McNair. Sadly,
Trent McNair announced in March '00
that he no longer has time to
maintain his bidwatcher program.
As a user of Bidwatcher, I decided that it was
trivial to release the work that I would do anyway to keep it
running. So, I set up this web site and I fix the bugs as I hear
about them. Since I only have access to Linux, I can't maintain
the MS-Windows version of this program. (It was based on a
different source tree anyway.)
I really appreciate Trent's work, and I can take little credit
for the current code.
Older versions of Bidwatcher
You can find older versions of bidwatcher in the
download directory. Most of these
versions won't work with Ebay, but they may be of historical
value. The most current version can always be found at
http://www.schlitt.net/bidwatcher/download/bidwatcher-current.tar.gz
.
Other Forks of Bidwatcher
There is at least one other fork from Trent McNair's verions of
bidwatcher out there.
The one I know of is at
http://bidwatcher.sourceforge.net/
and is being maintained by Larry Gilbert and Ben Byer. Our two forks are in the
process of being merged, although this may take a while. The
current "development" version of bidwatcher there probably
works, although it has had major changes and should not be used
if you don't want to help debug things.
When Larry tells me that he is ready, I expect that bidwatcher
will be transferred to sourceforge. I do not have time to do
active development on bidwatcher, and there is a lot of work
that needs to be done. I have mostly been just fixing bugs.
The work that I've done on the documentation is a response from
people having problems and me not being able to tell them to
"RTFM". In the long run, I hope this work will reduce my
involvement in bidwatcher.
Until this transfer takes place, it appears that this site is
where to get a working version of bidwatcher. After the
transfer takes place, I will maintain this URL and redirect it
to sourceforge so that there won't be dead links.
